Learning with a Tribe
Communities of Practice or COPs
In my previous issues-taking control our own learning, designing a curriculum for life, using learning strategies - I have mostly talked about learning with a focus on the individual.
And learning can be an individual pursuit, but the journey becomes more fun when you have fellow travellers. That is the idea of Communities of Practice (COP)- when you discover, create and share knowledge with a group, with your tribe.
The term COP was coined by the anthropologist - Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger when they were studying apprenticeship as a learning model.
It has 3 key elements : Domain, Community and Practice.
This image explains perfectly what these elements mean and contain.

An example of this is a wonderful COP I am a part of- L&D Shakers- a community for learning and development professionals.
Domain : Learning and Development
Community : Learning and Development professionals
Practice: We share best practices, knowledge, ask for help and guidance.
Community of Practice facilitates learning between people with a shared vision. People learn through their encounters, observations and even by helping others.

Start by narrowing down your domain.
For online communities, find groups on Facebook, LinkedIn or Slack. Or meet in the break room or for a cup of coffee with a group of people with a shared interest.
Become a part of the group.
